Health Insurance in Switzerland

2. April 2018

Switzerland does not have a social or government run health insurance like you have for example in with Medicare in Australia or the NHS in the UK.

Although it is mandatory to have a base level health insurance, you are free to choose the insurance provider you feel most comfortable with. The basic level (Grundversicherung) insurance is predefined by the Swiss government and the level of coverage is the same with all the insurance providers.

Newly Swissed wrote an extensive article about the hows and whys and ins and outs of the Swiss Health Insurance system from basic coverage (Grundversicherung) to private coverage, how “franchises” work and much more. Head over there to read more about it.
