Every so often we swap desks for streets and look at our own backyard with fresh eyes. For a recent Anchor Relocation team afternoon, we booked a Foxtrail—a clue-led city walk—and chose the Hera route in Zurich. We expected a pleasant stroll. We ended up in tiny passages, along quiet river bends, and at viewpoints we’d somehow never noticed—exactly the kind of detours you find when you explore Zurich with a bit of play. Not bad for people who show others around this city for a living.
Explore Zurich the playful way
If you like relaxed, outdoorsy ways to see the city—especially with visiting family, new colleagues or friends—Foxtrail sits neatly alongside a lake walk, an Uetliberg viewpoint, or an old-town coffee loop. It’s simple to organise, runs year-round, and nudges you to notice the details.
What is a Foxtrail?
Foxtrail turns the city into a puzzle. You follow clues—some visual, some coded—and move from station to station at your own pace. It’s self-guided, outdoors, and easy to pause for a coffee or photo. Routes run across Switzerland (Zurich included) in different lengths and levels.
Our afternoon on “Hera”
No spoilers, but Hera weaves familiar landmarks with side streets and green pockets. The clues are built so everyone contributes—someone spots a tiny detail, someone else cracks a pattern—and the route keeps you looking up and looking closer. Even as long-time Zurich specialists, we found new nooks and crannies.
Who is Foxtrail for
- Teams & colleagues: Shared focus, low pressure. Roles appear naturally—navigator, decoder, timekeeper—without forced “team building”.
- Families: Kids enjoy the “mission”; adults get a gentle logic-puzzle fix.
- Friends & guests: A simple way to show visitors around without turning into a tour guide.
Practical Notes
- Time: Most routes take 2–4 hours, depending on breaks and photos.
- Group size: 4–5 works well—enough ideas, no one sidelined.
- Footwear & weather: You will walk. Comfortable shoes help; layers make drizzly days pleasant (and quieter).
- Access: Some routes include steps or cobbles. If you have a stroller or mobility needs, check the specific trail notes before booking.
- Phones: One fully charged phone for the group is handy; a small battery pack never hurts.
For people relocating to Zurich and who are new in Zurich
For newcomers, Foxtrail is more than a nice afternoon. It helps build a mental map of everyday places—stations, shortcuts, river crossings, café clusters—without feeling like a checklist. We often suggest this kind of activity to clients who want orientation with a bit of play. After doing Hera together, we’re even more confident recommending it.
Planning to try a Foxtrail?
- Pick the city route in Zurich that fits your day and energy.
- Choose a start time with daylight to spare; late morning or early afternoon works well.
- Bring curiosity, comfortable shoes and one charged phone.
- Take your time. The point is to notice things along the way.
Note — Foxtrails are also available all across Switzerland—handy if you’re travelling or hosting visitors beyond Zurich.
Follow us along in pictures
From the underground passages of Zurich’s main train station to peaceful parkland, a stroll along the River Limmat, and even dungeons and narrow lanes in the Niederdorf—Hera led us through the city from a completely different angle, revealing corners we didn’t know existed.
